The Negative Effects of Nuclear Power Plants

Nuclear power plants have been a prominent source of the world’s energy as early as 1954, when the first one was constructed. These power plants have definitely provided the earth with positive outcomes. Nonetheless, I believe that the negative effects of the power plants far out way the positive effect. Nuclear power plants have damaged our environment, (especially the aquatic life near plants), cost our economy billions, and stress in our society. Although they are seen at a glance as a beneficial system, nuclear power plants have major flaws to our society.

A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station where the heat originates from a nuclear reactor. These plants’ main task is to provide steam, which in turn drives steam turbines that eventually produce electricity. The primary person who is thought of when it comes to nuclear energy is Enrico Fermi. He is the first scientist to split the atom, which led to the

Two of the major classes where nuclear power plants impact people are economically and environmentally. In the economics category, even though nuclear power plants do provide in some aspects, I do believe that they do not out way the negative aspects to the economy. Some of the good things about them are that “the average nuclear plant generates approximately $470 million in economic output” (Nuclear Energy Institute, 2014). Also, on average, each plant provides anywhere from 400-700 jobs. Nuclear power plants can also be good for local, state, and national governments because for every dollar spent at the plant translates in the creation of $1.04 for local governments, $1.18 for state governments, and $1.87 for the national government. Lastly, one major benefit from the nuclear power plants is the $16 million in local taxes to provide for schools and roads (Nuclear Energy Institute,

The Nuclear power has a lot of benefits, especially towards the environment. For example, in Document A, it states that “nuclear power production releases no pollutants into the air.” Meaning that while the nuclear power plant is giving out energy for us, it’s not harming the environment. This is important because since it's not releasing any air pollutants, then its not releasing any greenhouse gasses, the earth’s temperature is going to decrease. It's a win win for both the humanity and Earth.…

Nuclear energy is the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion. Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously or on impact with another particle, with the release of energy. Nuclear fusion on the contrary is the exact opposite; it gathers energy from the heavy nucleus combining with the shot particle. These two combined produce a lot of energy that is used all over the world on a daily basis. Nuclear power has proved to serve a huge part of our society today.…

However, he is inaccurate because in “The Fatal Flaws of Nuclear Power”, it discusses about the additional expenses of nuclear power since “Other aspects of nuclear power, such as the pollution from uranium mining, risks from nuclear weapons proliferation, dangers of reactor accidents, and the legacy of radioactive waste, are further hidden costs.” This demonstrates that constructing a nuclear reactor is highly priced, along with numerous other requirements that necessitate funds. Additionally, nuclear power generates harmful risks towards humans. Based on…

Nuclear power is one of the cheapest forms of energy compared to other sources such as oil and coal. According to studies done by professor Nolan E, Hertel, professor of Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, the cost of producing nuclear energy as of 2007 was 1.7 cents per kilowatt hour compared to 2.4 cents for coal, 6.7 cents for natural gas, and 10.2 cents for oil. However does this affordability come at a cost? According to Max Schulz at the center for Energy Policy and the Environment at the Manhattan Institute, there has not been a single accident or fatality involving exposure or harm at a nuclear power plant since the start of their operations in the United States (MI). When compared to the average of 200 accidental deaths per year at coal and natural gas powered plants, not including respiratory issues, its record is impeccable (Lehr).…

Some experts say that nuclear power is a good idea because it does not harm the environment in ways that other power sources do. According to Bradford A. Even though utilizing nuclear fission as a power source does have its respectable pros, the cons seem to overwhelm the pros. Setting up nuclear power plants is very expensive and the majority of nuclear power plants’ fuel relies on a very meager source. The other cons include and are not limited to: mining for the meager source poses a health risk to the people mining and not mining and if not dealt with properly, the radioactive materials used in a nuclear power plant can severely harm the environment as well as the people and animals within it. Opposed to other nonrenewable resources like coal, petroleum, and natural gas, nuclear power plants emits little to no amount of pollution/greenhouse gases into the air. In addition, they are cheap to run.…

Thus, nuclear power plants are more efficient than other fossil fuel power plants. Which in turn means that there are fewer natural resources being used to generate energy. Consequentially, there is less damage done to the natural environment to obtain the resources necessary to produce sufficient power. Cons: Some of the disadvantages of using nuclear power include, accidents have larger impacts, automatically a terrorist target, many operators have legal waivers in place, completely centralized, waste lasts a long time, and there are many unknown risks (Lombardo, 2015).…

Another plus of Nuclear energy is its footprint on the area of the earth is very small. Wind and solar take up quite a bit of area. Even though the wind turbine itself only takes up a small area, the land around it is pretty much useless except to let farm animals graze. Solar panels can use some useless space on top of buildings, but that doesn’t really amount to enough energy, so solar farms are built. A nuclear reactor can be the size of a semi truck, fit in a submarine, or the size of a house.…

Thesis: Our energy comes predominantly from fossil fuels because of it’s supposed inexpensiveness. However, the cost of fossil fuels in terms of human lives is often ignored. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is a much safer alternative because it results in fewer deaths per unit of energy produced than coal and natural gas. By comparing their outputs in terms of energy produced per unit of fuel consumed, and comparing that with the amount of byproducts produced as well as the amount of deaths associated with both energy sources we can analyse their relative harmfulness.…

Right now, our lives are fueled mostly by Coal, and Oil which create large disasters. Pollutants from these disasters flood into our oceans killing millions of fish, and other sea creatures. The pollutants also get into our air which cause smog in many cities, which can lead to death amongst thousands of small children. The time is now to switch to an alternate source of electricity that is required to save our planet.…
