Monochronic is a huge thing in countries like the United States, Israel, Germany, and Switzerland. Nowadays they have clocks on every wall, they wear watches, and check the time when they can. Monochronic culture has emphasis toward past, present, or future thinking. They are inclined to make “to-do” lists, priorities, set goals, daily plans, schedule appointments, and so on. They are concerned with punctuality and the amount of time spent with activities or tasks. The saying goes, “if you are early you are on time but if you are on time you are late.” Monochronic people would rather complete their activities or tasks on time, and if not then rewards cannot be offered for efficient use of time. They have concern more for the details of the activities or tasks, regardless of the time required. The phrase “time management” would not occur in the language of an Polychronic culture. They tend to be more flexible with their time and stress more on the consideration of a problem until it is fixed. They have a “let come what may” outlook on life and are not tied to a precise schedule. For example, when it comes to cooking meals America is all about the fast food restaurants. The typical American family sits down and eats with each other for an hour at the most when they are not in a rush out the door. For a Polychronic family, they sit down with each other while the meal is being cooked then they can spend hours actually eating. They talk after and are expected to help with dishes. Once dinner is over three hours have passed by. Something like this for Monochronic people would drive them insane.
