Parents, guardians, educators and several other people believe that having a long school day can benefit a student 's education and increase academic achievement. However, I believe that constantly doing work for a major period of time, results in many negative impacts. Coming back to the original statement, I believe that having a 16 hour school day creates many negative impacts on the school, its education model, and ultimately the students themselves. Therefore, I pose this question. Should school end earlier throughout the day? This is a commonly asked question around the world that needs to be considered. …show more content…
Without the time for those activities, a student 's mental and physical health can become negatively impacted. Spending quality time with family is very critical for a child 's wellbeing. Having time with family is important for creating lifelong memories, building strong connections with siblings and parents and for having fun. Without this, a child will become less connected and that could potentially lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Families spend just over 8 hours a week together due to modern life demands (School, Work, e.t.c). Reducing the school day hours will make it easier for family members to invest more time together. Secondly, completing homework, projects and studying for important exams is very crucial during middle school and high school. Ending school earlier will allow students to receive extra time to focus on their work for school. Having the time provided at home could improve the quality of the students work. 49% of students in secondary school take over an hour and a half to complete their homework and 39% of elementary students take just over an hour to complete their homework as well. The statistics above show that students are taking a big portion of their personal time to complete school tasks. As a result of having a shorter school day, students will be able to balance out work time and free time evenly as they have longer breaks after school. Thirdly, many students enjoy taking part in different sports and daily activities after school. There are many mental and physical health benefits when a student exercises. According to the RWJF/Harvard/NPR survey in 2015, Parents appreciate the effects that daily activity has on their child. 88% of parents said it boosted their physical health, 81% said it teaches them dedication and discipline which

Should school start later in the morning? In my opinion, I think that school should start later in the morning for these three reasons the students nor the teachers will be so tired and want to sleep, students that drive would be less likely to get into an accident, and students and teachers would have more time to eat a healthy breakfast. I think starting school at a later time would be better for both teachers and students. We all know that one person that is always falling asleep in class it could be anyone, or it could be you! A lot of teens do sports, a job, or some other activities after school so that means you won’t get home till about 10, 11, or even 12 if you’re 18 and work a long shift.…

The National Sleep Foundation explains “High school athletics are very important to many students who have obvious concerns about the impact of a change in start times on their ability to participate. Any delay in the start of school will most likely result in a later release time, which may reduce the time available for practice and matches (especially daylight hours)..” Though it is most likely true that if schools were to start later, they would be released later, that should not result in problems with after school activities. Practices, clubs, and other activities that take part in students lives after school can be easily rescheduled, and lights can be installed or settings can be changed if it gets too dark outside for kids to play sports or do outdoor activities. According to Dr. Bert Jacobson, professor and head of the School of Educational Studies at Oklahoma State University, "Sleep deprivation impacts us physically, which can negatively affect our coordination, agility, mood, and energy.…

And even if they do change the school start time, the students might change their sleep schedule to an even later one, knowing that school will start later in the day. You might say that, “Another reason why some students can’t get enough sleep is because of homework that they need to finish.” I say that this argument is invalid, because if the school start time will be delayed, then the school end time will also be delayed, and you’ll still get the same amount of hours you’ll have between when school stops and when school starts again the next day. It doesn’t change anything. To sum it up, I think that middle and high school days should not start later.…

If students start earlier then they get to leave earlier (classroom.synonym.com). This opinion is false because even if school will still begin at the same time as usual and kids will still be tired. Even if school did start earlier it would not be worth it for kids and teenagers because they need more sleep, which would mean they would need to go to bed earlier in the evening to get in a full eight hours. With sports, homework and other activities it is not possible for kids to go to bed early enough to get up in the morning. This would only be more harmful, even if it meant getting to leave school earlier.…
