Gender discrimination is a frequently discussed issue in today’s culture. In social media, gender roles are frequently assigned. For example, @MeninistTweet is a Twitter page that focuses on how gender roles are weighted in women's favor and support the negative gender roles of women. Also, gender norming, the practice of judging women in the workplace by less demanding standards than their male counterparts, and how women should act and be treated is a recurring source of friction in today's civilized culture. The negative effects of gender discrimination include mistreatment of women in the workplace and in academia, rape culture, and gender based assumptions about career choices.

Gender discrimination against women causes major social, emotional and professional damage. Social damage is seen through a cultural setting where women are taken advantage of for the benefit of others needs or wants, emotional damage is seen through rape culture and how women are supposed to act based upon it, and professional damage is seen through mistreatment of women in the workplace or in places of academia.
