How Does Foster Care Affect Children

The Foster Care system for children, has dealt with several complications throughout its 160-year history (Developmental Issues). There has been a lack of knowledge about Foster Care in general, incomplete information being presented to the foster parents, not enough health professionals available in this field, children who are faced with a mental illness who are not getting adequate care, and uncoordinated medical care with records being stretched across the system. Children are placed into the Foster Care System for many reasons. Some have encountered abuse, neglect, abandonment or even death of the family members. Children have all different resulting responses due to the circumstances that placed them in Foster Care, and from being in the system itself. They can be negatively influenced during their transition to adulthood from the psychological, emotional and physical stress.

Imagine you were returning to your group home that you have spent years at, and being told that you can no longer live here because the system cannot compensate your service. Now, envision what it would be like to be sent out of those homes with no job, no home, no money, and no true form of identification. How will you survive? Where will you find food? How will you get from point A to point B? Where is your income going to come from? Children who grow up in the Foster Care system have a hard time transitioning to adulthood. Whether it is transitioning into college, a new job, marriage, first child or even paying bills, one who has not been prepared for life’s challenges, will not be able to overcome what has been thrown at
