Introduction
Child marriage is a common event in many countries. Girls as young as ten forced into marriage by their parents and almost the groom is older than the girl, sometimes as old as her father. Early marriages have negative effects on the quality of life that the girl will have. When a child is married off, often to someone the age of her father or even older, their childhood is taken away, and they are then burdened with responsibilities that would normally rest on the shoulders of a grown up. It is essentially judging itself to a life of ignorance and obscurity. Illiteracy in such communities is unbelievably high. Research has shown that communities where the women are highly educated are more prosperous than communities do not see any value in educating their women (Hadden and London, 1996). Some people even believe that is more beneficial to the welfare of the society to educate a girl than to do a boy. This is because women are the homemakers and the solid foundation or cornerstone which most of homes are built. They are the ones who cook, give birth, raise children to take care of the old and even their husbands. Educated women are more hygienic, know how the importance of various type of foods and minerals and thus can prepare more balanced diets, understand the dynamics of pregnancy, lactation and the requirements of infancy. This ensures low rates of infant mortality, child birth and pregnancy deaths, low spreading of HIV, etc. Early child marriages deny the society a chance at an educated female population making it less prosperous and more backward. Young children have lower immunity when compared to adults. When in a marriage situation, these young girls are expected to engage in sexual acts with their husbands. These husbands are often way older than the girl, and so the girl cannot really rebuke them for any behavior they engage in. More often than not these old men are polygamous and have multiple partners, many wives as well as concubines. In case one of these many lovers has a sexually transmitted disease, the disease will easily spread around.
