They explain that technology is a part of our world now and children are subject to being exposed to it from a very early age. Their parents use it and children, even if one does not realize it, respond and model after their family members’ actions. A child just has to watch their parent use a technology once before they are developing their own knowledge on how to do it as well. The skills that are necessary for the use of digital media are what children are going to have to become experts at later on in their life. When this technology is presented to them in a play setting, children become intrigued want to learn how to use it. Therefore, Plowman et al. (2012) do not see a problem with having children start to learn these skills earlier rather than later, if anything it just makes them more prepared for the world of technology that they live in. They also explain that digital media and its components are actually great for stimulating the brain and increasing a child’s memory. This can allow the child to have more chances to learn including developing the skills needed to operate the technologies, extending their knowledge of the world they live in, seeing how technology is used every day, creating social and cognitive opportunities of learning (Plowman et al., 2012). All of these experiences with digital media are seen as …show more content…
The author, House (2012), strongly explains the negative impact that ICT, another term for digital media, can have on young children. He argues that the use of technology has taken away one’s ability to communicate affectively with one another and connect to nature. Experiences with digital media that we should be having as a support to our real life experiences have now become the only ones that we have. Children need real and relational connections with people through communication and play but the only relationship they are developing is with their machines or computers (House, 2012). He goes on to explain that not only does the use of technology have an affect on children socially, it also affects the development of the senses and maturity of the brain. The brain is immature at birth and uses every experience it sees to help develop its senses. If over-stimulated by digital images and videos early on, the development of these senses can be effected. The development and maturity of the brain comes from what interactions it has, so when the only interactions it experiences are through a computer than natural development of the brain and attention skills will be
