Cancer, a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in parts of the body is an illness that ravishes the lives of many.There are approximately 100 different types of cancers known to us today, yet contracting even one of them can cause serious issues and can even result in fatality. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in children and adolescents. Children affected by these diseases have to overcome many obstacles just to survive.There are many misconceptions believed about young cancer patients, some thinking that they just lie in a hospital beds and get glorified for being sick;however, the patients go through various struggles everyday. Not every patient is exactly alike but some may experience "visible side effects such as hair loss, weight gain or loss and physical disfigurement" (Public Interest Government Relations Office). Children may notice the difference and might be somewhat affected by it; however, adolescents in particular struggle with the physical aspect of this disease, some may not even recognize the person they see in the mirror anymore and this leads to negative perception of self appearance and even low self esteem. Another effect of acquiring cancer at a young age is the strain that is put onto one 's body, these stressors usually consist of "procedural distress, pain, nausea and vomiting, and anticipatory anxiety" (Psychosocial Functioning in Pediatric Cancer). The treatments for these various types of cancers may be painful but most adolescents and children bear through the pain in hopes to be well soon and to have the ability to live a normal life. It comes with specific problems,it comes with its own tragedies, it comes with hardships completely of its own. The many causes of Cancer include schooling, social and emotional effects and physical effects that result from acquiring a disease as serious as cancer at such a young age.The schooling aspect of cancer is usually a hard pill to swallow for some parents and children because education is such a huge part of our future as a whole, without proper schooling the minds of the Youth in our society will not have sufficient means to proceed onto higher levels. Aside from the logistics of cancer the social and emotional effects can lead to so many subcategories such as depression and bipolar behavior and violent mood swings and resentment of others because of all the suffering they endure.(One of the last major effects of Childhood Cancer is the physical side of things, most patients need to get pumped with many drugs and treatments in order to merely survive. Experiencing any of these effects can be a difficult thing to deal with because schooling is a big part of life it provides experiences, social and emotional effects can lead to serious health problems and no one wants to endure tedious surgeries and procedures. "We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.” (Kenji Miyazawa).
