Kids at most ages go to their phones for entertainment, and to check on whatever other people are doing. In the high school setting that is not the case, and is prohibited on their computers, and laptops. The CIPA was enacted to protect kids from negative images, and other harmful websites. Most students carry a purse or backpack, which can be searched at a teacher or administrator’s discretion. In most cases, teachers do not search but rather report their suspicion(s) to an administrator. Now with the mass influx of technology, this decision will also affect students’ use of cell phones and other electronic devices that store information. It will be interesting to see if the decision in this case also applies to going through a student’s personal information, such as messages on a laptop or cell phone. The decision in New Jersey v. T.L.O. still stands that that school administrators don't need to have a search warrant or probable cause before conducting a search because students have a reduced expectation of privacy when in…

Teachers have to fight kids to put them down just so they can focus on what is going on in the classroom. Kids who normally take notes are now playing games on their phone and failing their classes. It is shown that kids who use laptops in class score 11% lower on tests and quizzes. They showed that the laptop interfered with the students learning and ability to comprehend, therefore they scored lower on tests than the students who took notes with pencil/pen and paper (Devices in Class). Using computers, students may be allowed to click on and/or find inappropriate content that should not be in schools.…

Lenient Cell Phone Rules: In an effort to ease parents’ worries and let them know their children’s whereabouts, most schools have allowed students to have cell phones on campus. In case of an emergency, such as Columbine, students now have a way to communicate with their parents or law enforcement by using their cell phones. Before the Columbine shooting, few schools allowed cell phones to be carried on campus or used on school grounds, but this decision has also caused a great deal of disruptions in the classroom and has even given way to bomb threats and other school attacks. Kantianism is the reasoning to do the right thing, the duty, and having treating everyone equally and not to use someone as a means to an end, and by this theory, the RUX’s action is not ethically justified. The RUX Universities actions on restricting computer usage is in fact justified by this theory. Research by the MIT’s Department of Economics and the US National Bureau of Economic Research show the negative impact on student’s academic performance with computer usage. What the RUX University is trying to accomplish, is to restrict the usage in classroom, which assumes the halt of the negative impact. So they are indeed trying to do the right thing by helping student’s academic performance improve, which is morally doing the right thing, hence it being justified.…

Due to a rise in social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, people have questioned school administrators’ rights to monitor their students’ social media activity. Schools not only have the right, but also the duty, to scrutinize the internet presence of their students. Many teens may argue against this invasive activity, but it may turn out to be a blessing, rather than a curse. In recent years there has been an emergence of private companies whose clients include schools and other business entities that monitor social media accounts.…

Kids are always asking to get on there phone for school resources, and then are found on social media, which leads to cyberbullying, and a non-learning environment. Teacher Joni Siani explains it this way: “You’ll get kids saying, i’ll look something up for english, and while i’m here let me quickly check my instagram or twitter feed ( which most students tend to do).” Sure phones can be used for an english assignment, or just to use for research in school, but we can prevent this from happening by putting away phones, or even blocking websites. Therefore if phones are taken away during school hours, then this will help prevent less cyberbullying, and a better learning learning…

There have been a lot of questions lately about whether or not officials should be allowed to search through phones and other personal devices. Some may say that they should be able to for safety reasons. Officials should not be allowed to partake in the activity of invading a person’s privacy by searching through their phone or other device. Students and suspects, alike, should be allowed to keep their phones away from school officials and police officers. For example, if a student has done something unsupported by the school on social media, the school should leave it alone.…

Students should not be aloud to have their phone out in class or at school. If they have their phone out it could cause them to not listen, and it will just make a big distraction. It is ok if kids are just listening to music and are able to listen to the directions the teachers gives, but most can’t do that because they are distracted. They should put their phone away and listen when the teacher is talking, or just leave it at home so they can concentrate, and when they do have there phone out they can text there parents to come and get them because “they don’t feel good”. When the teacher is talking and a student has their phone out they should put it away so they know what to do.…
