Over the years there have been several incidents that have stirred up the emotions of people, parents and especially investigators. These incidents include the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, the Columbine Massacre, and the incident in Colorado where a man went on a shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater. There was one key thing that aroused people’s emotions connected by investigators to all three incidents: video games. This led to the belief that if the parents’ children play violent video games that the child will become violent. Even though people have been led to believe that video games cause people to become cruel and commit violent actions, video games do not cause people to commit acts of violence because they don 't have time to and they do not gain violent behaviors even with the long term effects of video games, there is insufficient research linking video games with violence only aggressive behaviors, and the fact that video games are only a contributing factor of violence.…

The adverse effects from violent media on youth have long vexed the American public. For decades, scholars studied the impact that TV and film violence had on children, and concluded that high exposure to televised violence may lead to an increase in aggressive behaviors and desensitization (Eron, Huesmann, Lefkowitz, & Walder, 1972; Josephson, 1987; Huesmann, Moise-Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 2003). However, technological advancements in the video game industry changed the media landscape, and it was expected that video game violence would have similar, possibly greater, effects on youth as TV and film; thus, video games that stimulated aggressive attitudes, feelings, and behaviors in children were of specific concern.…

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that real life violence can be traced back to exposure to violent video games. This, of course, can be easily falsified due to the increasing number of teens that have been exposed to violent video games without committing any violent offenses. Since video games are interactive and may even encourage role-playing, they may cause teens to lose sight of reality. The guidelines of how children usually learn include adopting behaviors after seeing and mimicking them. However, these findings are inconclusive because not all teens learn the same way. Therefore, playing a video game may have a different effect on one teenager than…

Violent video games do not affect people in negative ways. Recently many people have been doing tests to see if video games are making people, mainly teenagers, act out in more violent ways. When video games affect one’s behavior, it is called “priming”. Although video games have become more violent over the years, video games do not make teenagers act out more cruelty because data collected from tests show no change, some psychologists believe it actually reduces poor decisions, and today almost all young males are playing video games yet they are not all acting out.…

Many believe that these games desensitize players to violence, reward players for simulating violence, and teach them that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts. On the other hand, video game supporters argue that a vast majority of the research on the topic is deeply flawed and that no fundamental relationships have been found between video games and social violence. They see gaming as an outlet rather than a cause for aggression. This issue remains up for discussion, with even the government getting involved. Do violent video games contribute to aggression among children?…

One of the most mentioned issues regarding the debate around video games is that they heighten aggression. While some studies suggest an argument that violent video games cause increased violent behaviours, individuals, as well as some media outlets often, fail to see that this "heightened aggression" is often merely frustration at the game itself. One can easily picture the scene of an angered teenager screaming at the TV in their room due to a failed level, quest or mission or even the death of their character as if they were cut off whilst driving by a speeding heap of metal that narrowly misses their own. While many teens experience frustration in daily life and video games can serve as an outlet for that frustration or inadvertently amplify it, there is not a direct correlation between violent crime and playing violent video games - merely heightened aggression, such as moving less politely to get on a crowded train, or cutting someone off in traffic; were such a connection to exist the rate of violent crime should logically have skyrocketed since the advent of video games as popular media.…

In the debate that violent video games increase violent behavior, there are many articles that suggest aggressive behavior is due to the violence in the video games that are being played by gamers.
