Essay On Internet Censorship

Chances are everyone who has ever read this and will read this uses the internet daily. It is an incredibly convenient tool that allows us to find information in mere seconds. Imagine if our access to that information was suddenly limited, or even completely denied. That is the daily reality for citizens of China today. Their government censors anything on the internet that they do not agree with, and blocks popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, and YouTube. Some areas, such as Aba County, are completely denied internet access altogether (Beam). Some argue that, while not to this extent, a system of internet censorship should be implemented in America. However, that would have many negative consequences. Internet censorship should not be implemented because it violates our rights, is far too …show more content…
Supporters claim that internet censorship could filter out viruses that would target big businesses and access all of their information, which would eventually hurt the economy. However, it is highly unlikely that big businesses would not have the funds to attain proper security software and hire competent staff to prevent this from happening. Smaller businesses may not be able to do so, but they would likely not have a profound effect on the economy if they were to go out of business, and certainly not as much of an effect as large corporations. Supporters also argue that internet censorship could prevent file sharing by blocking file sharing sites, which would benefit musicians and film companies who suffer losses from people illegally downloading their content for free. While it is possible that this could mostly prevent this from occurring, it is likely that some people would find a way around this. Whether it worked or not, the high economic costs would not outweigh the benefits provided to businesses, musicians, and

Kreimer argues “the First Amendment doctrines developed...to protect the weak links on the internet” (Kreimer, 3). Kreimer states this to first give his readers his own personal thoughts on the subject and then to prove his argument. Kreimer also states “ proxy censorship of the internet is no passing fad: it is a growth industry of internet regulation” (Kreimer,5). He tells his readers this to show them is not a new concept and that this industry needs to grow in order to be used all over the…

A complicated word isn't it, ‘censorship’. It comes from the Latin word ‘censere’ which means to give as one's opinion, something nonexistent in an Anthem society. Like many things, a world without censorship can be scary, but a world with too much of it, is a world with no meaning. Look at Anthem, the people who live in that society have no meaning, no life, no importance. Although many people can't imagine comparing the United States to an Anthem society, I believe the United States is an Anthem society because America has huge amounts of censorship when it comes to the press.…

I believe that anyone at an any given time can be subjected to some harmful or subjective material on the internet. However, we cannot allow minor and few circumstances permission to control our internet. We would become a country that we have worked so hard to become, and a country we are proud to be a part of. I don’t think Internet Censorship would do us any favors. It violates our first amendment, forces us to become a communist society, and prevents us from receiving the truth.…

The word censorship defines as blocking something from being heard, seen or read. I believe that there was a time that when censorship should be appropriate for the First Amendment. Although the First Amendment is about the free flow of information, ideas, and opinions that can be expressed in our society by responsible citizens, however, our government should be able to regulate the speech through the court consistently to determine if the government’s reason outweighs the importance of our democratic freedoms with ethical responsibilities. Censorship can also be an act of changing a message, including the change of deletion (complete removal of the message of the news or what was said), between the sender and the receiver. Censorship can be used for the good, by being ethically responsible.…

"Since the internet was invented in 1990, politicians have debated over a very pressing question: how much power should the government have over the internet? I, for one, believe that the government should not have any control over the internet, but overall, that ideal is unrealistic. Without some sort of government regulation, the free network we have come to know may be abused by large corporations in order to turn a profit. In contrast, if there is too much government involvement, the internet could easily become flooded with propaganda or shut off completely if it so pleased those in power. In the end, neither side can truly win without there being some sort of socio-political ramifications.…

Do you think the 1st amendment should be held firm with no restrictions or should it be a guide for the country? Does censorship play a protective or restrictive role in the society? I believe that the first Amendment is but a guide for our country and it's freedoms are based upon it. I also think that censorship plays a protective role in America because of the “government's act of banning or altering media, speech, or performances. ”-Via HG.ORG…

Years ago, our forefathers established a place that was a haven for the basic rights that come in the form of our Amendments. These Amendments have shaped the way that we live life and form the basis of our government. Today, our society is centered around technology. The internet is used globally containing all aspects of life ranging from politics to education to entertainment. Although the internet has become a necessity in the development of civilization, the privacy and security it provides has come into question. Countries such as China and North Korea decided to regulate the information provided to their citizens through the internet, which, I happen to disagree with, and has sparked some discussion. I believe the government should not be allowed to regulate/ censor information on the internet as it violates the First Amendment, it is shown to be oppressive in other countries, and people will be able to find a way around it.…

The term digital divide refers to the “gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology, and those that don't or have restricted access.” Countries such as United States of America, Canada, and Japan have the highest percentages of households with Internet access. Countries in South America often have a much lower number of households with Internet, and have thin bandwidth coverage. In Mexico, about 35% of homes have a computer, but 14% of these percentages do not have access to Internet. In comparison to other countries in South America, Mexico lags behind other nations such as Chile, Argentina, and Brazil.…
