The United States is a nation known for its immigrants. Historically, the US welcomed immigrants and encouraged them to migrate. Today, the United States immigration system is greatly flawed and broken. Moreover, some immigrants are no longer welcomed; however, they continue to come. The government has tried to stop illegal immigration, failing multiple times. If we come up with a plan to legalize those who are honest and hardworking, we could end all the negative consequences that come with illegal immigration. In the other hand, an illegal immigrant is a person who leaves his/her country and moves to the US without following the process of becoming a legal resident (IRS, 2014). Today, most people who immigrate illegally do so because they have no ties to the US, therefore, not being able to immigrate legally. Moreover, some illegal immigrants enter the US by crossing the US-Mexican border. While some immigrants have visitors visas and enter the country legally, but they failed to leave the country before the visa expires becoming illegal immigrants.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, American encouraged free and open immigration. The government rarely questioned their policy until the end of the Civil War, when some states passed immigration laws. This led to the Supreme Court ruling against free and open immigration. After a great amount of immigrants continued to immigrate, the economy began to suffer. However, we do not welcome them to stay and help our community. If we pass a law that allows them to continue their education and stay in the US permanently it will greatly help our economy. Legalizing those who come to this country looking for a better future will force them and their employees to follow the rules. Most importantly, families will no longer be ripped apart and those who have intentions of working hard will no longer poses the need for welfare. We can stop all the consequences of having illegal immigrants by fixing the system and stopping all the negative consequences that come with them, while helping the US at the same time.
