“Hunters kill more than 200 million animals yearly, the annual death toll in the U.S. includes 42 million mourning doves, 30 million squirrels, 28 million quail, 25 million rabbits, 20 million pheasants, 14 million ducks, 6 million deer, thousands of geese, bears, moose, antelope, swans, cougars, turkeys, wolves, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, boars, and other woodland creatures” (Idausa). Animals around the country are being killed by the millions in the United States alone. These cruel and heartbreaking acts are being justified by hunters and poachers around the world manipulating the negative connotation of hunting. Hunting is defined as survival and providing for yourself and your family. Hunting animals and killing them does not only provide food but also for fabric and clothing. The claws and teeth of hunted animals can be used for weapons, tools, or even decoration. Hunting has come along to help people to get to where we are today and has helped develop agriculture. The necessity for hunting has lessened as agriculture improved making food easier to access. Technology has also helped on reducing the need to hunt, but the question on why people still have the urge to hunt is debatable. People either hunt for entertainment or for survival. Hunting has been an alive tradition for centuries and is also considered a sport today. Back then, hunting was viewed as a skill to show off and be proud of; it was a sign of strength, courage, and wit. The meaning of hunting is often confused and mistakenly seen as “poachers.” Poachers kill animals for their own profit and desire to gain more for themselves out of these animals. Hunters have different intentions; they see hunting as a sport not a killing spree for profit. But, it has the effect of preserving or even eliminating a whole species of animals or birds. Hunting can also be beneficial to the human population by preventing the overpopulation of a certain species. This topic has being going back and forth due to the controversy. Gun control can also be included in this topic and it is a huge factor in this case since today’s hunting is done by using firearm. People consider guns and other weapons as dangerous and the cause for many crimes cause in the daily occasions. Many other people believe that guns should be given to those who can control them correctly and want to use them for self-defense only. On the other hand, this whole situation has been a huge problem, because many deaths have occurred in the past decade. Although human murder is illegal, animal murder is legal and seen as either a fun game or a vicious profit massacre. As humans are growing feelings toward animals of all kinds they started recognizing that they have feelings also. The use of animals for entertainment is illegal across the United States and several countries; therefore why should hunting be legal? Just as a dog can be trained to a very high level of knowledge so can any other animal, but it may require a more intense training practices. This new generation trending is going towards wanting to make equality into a reality similar to the movements decades before.
