There are many different ideologies on what the definition of a feminist is. When the word feminist appears it is automatically correlated with a connotation that most people want to distance themselves away from. This is a prevalent issue for women that want to identify themselves as a feminist because they have to challenge what society and culture’s beliefs are. To explain the negative connotation of feminism, first the concept of feminism needs to be defined. Throughout mass media it demonstrates how it is sustaining and reinforcing the disinterest in wanting to become a feminist and the different stereotypes and connotations that are connected to feminism. Shailene Woodley is a famous actress in many well known movies such as divergent, and the fault in our stars; within these movies she is characterized as being a strong female lead. Although when Woodley was asked if she identified as a feminist she said she wasn’t a feminist because she loved men. (5) Feminism is not categorized by the hatred of men although many people have this belief. Lady Gaga, a famous pop singer was reported saying that she too wasn’t a feminist because she loves men. (5) Kelly Clarkson, another well recognized pop singer, explained that “I think when people hear feminist, it’s like, ‘Get out of my way, I don’t need anyone.” (5) Feminism may give people a sense of self-worth and independence but it doesn’t mean that they have to isolate themselves. Celebrities have a fear that if they don’t say or act in the right way that they will be rejected within society. (5) This can stop them from identifying as a feminist because they are scared that they will not be accepted by others. Pharell Williams said that he was not a feminist since he was a male while still supporting the rights of female empowerment and equality. (6) Pharell supports the core values of feminism but denies that he can characterize himself as a feminist because he is male.
