The American culture portrays beauty in many different mediums, magazines, television shows, movies, and online. For decades women have been put under pressure to maintain a certain standard; girls in our current society are forced from a very young age to look, act, and feel a certain way. Women and young girls are obsessively trying to change their physical looks to have the perfect body that is portrayed in all types of media, although most of it is photoshopped and airbrushed pictures. Negative body imaging can have bad consequences on women, this false conception of beauty gives women a feeling of dissatisfaction within themselves, which leads to health problems and sometimes suicides. The reason behind this is to be reach that goal to be thin at any cost. An eating disorder is a psychological disorder that causes you to eat abnormally. Women have taken drastic measures to try and lose weight by making themselves purge every time they eat, by refusing to eat at all, eating one meal a day or just drinking liquids. All these examples are very unhealthy and very unsafe. “One eating disorder commonly known is called anorexia nervosa, the most deadly psychiatric disorder in the U.S.. Bulimia, another mental disorder gives people the urge to vomit purge large quantities of food after they have eaten. Bulimia may be less deadly but it 's still more common in society today.” ( Eating Disorders)Anorexia is a mental disorder that drives people to starve themselves in order to be skinny. Sex sells. The million dollar marketing and advertising companies that are paid with our taxes are mostly run by men. Men run all the marketing and advertising companies that shape our views of ourselves, only about 4.6% of women are CEO’s, and 25 % of most women are only managers. (Catalyst) These men have a certain standard or “look” for their commercial businesses that we pay with our tax money that funds most of the magazine companies, media and clothing lines to build their fans and audience by using their most attractive people, spokespersons, models and magazine covers. These advertising schemes that adolescent, young girls and women fall for, prey on our insecurities. They give us a false sense of the need to look perfect when everyone is who they are and not someone else. Women are mostly known to have low self esteem more than men. Some people don 't fall for the for the media 's daily reminder why we should look a certain way. Most people actively know that the media is just that, media and know it 's unrealistic that gives a false sense of achievement from other people. Even though the media doesn 't affects everyone the media can still influence the impressionable or those who lack self esteem and confidence. Media influence is everywhere, basically inescapable, so we need to see though the media because they only produce self acceptance issues around the world constantly changing
