In Nectar in a Sieve, written by Kamala Markandaya, the main character Rukmani suffers a great deal starting from her childhood throughout her adult life. Throughout dealing with hunger, vicious weather, change, and tremendous amounts of deaths, Rukmani transforms into an extremely strong woman. Life of Pi, told by Yann Martel, the main character by the name of Pi, who faces with the denial of the destruction of all he has known. In his journey across the ocean he experiences many challenges along the way. Both Nectar in a Sieve and Life of Pi depict the theme that suffering shapes not only character but also the amount of strength that encompasses someone. Rukmani is married at the age of twelve to Nathan, a poor farmer, who didn’t own the land he worked on. Rukmani is faced with mental, physical and emotional pain throughout the entire course of her life. “There we were, the four of us, hysterical, released, rocking with laughter and gasping for breath which ran out as fast as we sucked it in. Pi’s ship crashes and all his family is killed. "And what of my extended family – birds, beasts, and reptiles? They too have drowned. Every single thing I value in life has is destroyed. And I am allowed no explanation? I am to suffer hell without any account from heaven? In that case, what is the purpose of reason, Richard Parker?" (Martel, 98) Pi begins to wonder if suffering truly has a purpose. He questions why his family has been killed and why his life was destroyed. “I began to wait. My thoughts swung wildly. I was either fixed on practical details of immediate survival or transfixed by pain, weeping silently, my mouth open and my hands at my head.” (Martel 111) Pi has kept his emotions bottled up within himself and he is truly feeling suffering here.
