In Nectar and a Sieve it was about Indian women who lived in a village where she went through some struggles with her family. In the novel you could find some important, powerful motifs and symbols.
Struggle was a powerful motif in nectar in a sieve .rice being the perfect symbols I would say represented the fact that they weren’t accessed too much food due to the condition of their finances also tragic seasons of weather. This was huge struggle for them. Kunti was someone who was able to actually threaten and blackmail ruku and her family with rice .that shows how much they value the rice. There was nothing else left but them and their rice in order to survive and they even went through a grief time when they lost their son due to starvation.

Nirmal in his journal uses the metaphor of mohonas to bring together rivers of language: …the mudbanks of the tide country are shaped not only by rivers of silt, but also by rivers of language: Bengali, English, Arabic, Hindi, Arakanese and who knows what else? Flowing into each other they create a proliferation of small worlds that hang suspended in the flow. And so it dawned on me: the tide country’s faith is something like one of its great mohonas, a meeting not just of many rivers, but a circular round about people can use to pass in many directions – from country to country and even between faiths and religions (THT 247). A study of Amitav Ghosh’s novels without doubt involves a deliberation on the unpredictability of boundary whether corporeal, ethnic or emotional. This novel involves more personal divisions between men and women, besides other borders.…

Everyone faces hardships differently, and with every hardship, individuals have the verdict of whether to persevere or surrender. In the novel Nectar in a Sieve, the author Kamala Markandaya explores themes of optimism and how it weaves its way into the hardships of Rukmani’s and Nathan’s lives. Throughout the novel, the family faced many challenges. These challenges were indeed difficult at times, but certainly not impossible to deal with when one is in an optimistic state of mind. Though the present can be unkind—and under the circumstances, all may seem hopeless—the outcomes will be favorable in the end if hope is instilled.…
