Singer is not qualified for this task the others have forced upon because he, himself is bewildered and does not understand the awkward situation. When Antonopoulos, his only friend, dies in an insane asylum due to sickness, Singer commits suicide. In a way it is understandable and almost expected of Singer to commit suicide after receiving the news of his friend’s tragic death. Singer has nothing left in this world, nothing to connect or hold on to. The other four may have considered themselves Singer’s friends but he never saw them in that way, if anything Singer was more of an involuntary “therapist” for these people. Singer’s “therapist” and confidant was Antonopoulos, the only person he believed to have truly understood him.
