Nebraska, directed by Alexander Payne, is a simplistic midwest movie. It tells the story of a dysfunctional family, centering on father and son. The son, David, gets wrapped up in his father’s belief that he has won a million dollars as a sweepstakes prize. David knowing full well that it’s a scam from a magazine subscription, gets dragged into helping his determined father get to Lincoln, Nebraska to collect his winnings. A theme central to Nebraska is detachment.
David and his father Woody don’t have a very close relationship. Woody has long been an alcoholic and has never acted much like a father. The journey that David and Woody take to Lincoln gives David the opportunity to get to know more about his father and spend more time with him, since he knows his father might not have much time left. David asks Woody many questions, regarding relationship advice and information about his past. Woody responds in a very non emotional, uninterested way. This shows that Woody is detached from his emotions. He doesn’t really interact closely with his family, or anyone for that matter.

But, an inference can be made that it could be because of his family members and other people living there. Peg Bender tells David that Woody had a kind heart and had a hard time refusing favors in the past. However, that led to people taking advantage of his kindness and using him for money or to work on their cars for free. Perhaps being used and treated poorly by people close to him has made Woody become more detached from people along with detached from his hometown. The way people treated him may have caused him to stay at more of a distance. Knowing that there is bad in the world to take advantage has made him more detached to lessen the pain of knowing
