Stat 3021 Practical Assignment Part 3 by Braden McDowell Introduction For the Stat 3021 project, I was interested in determining how NBA draft position impacted a player’s performance. More specifically, I aimed to determine “Do players drafted 1st overall tend to have a higher average win share per 48 minutes (WS/48 — see https://www.basketball-reference.com/about/ws.html for information on the calculation of this stat) than players drafted 2nd overall in their rookie seasons?” I hold a longstanding passion for basketball, and I especially am interested in front office decision making. This project allowed me to explore the difference in value between the 1st and 2nd overall picks and better understand how management teams see these picks.…

This form of analysis provides an objective and quantitative record of events in a player’s performance in a reliable and consistent format/manner (Hughes & Franks, 2007, p. 9). Historically, notational analysis has been utilised to interpret events in a player’s performance across a range of activities, such as movement patterns of dancers (Reilly, 2003, p. 246), shot selection of lawn tennis players (Hughes & Franks, 2008, p. 98) and distance covered of football players (Reilly, 2003, p. 249). This concurs with Hughes and Franks’ (2004, p. 1) work who contend that notational analysis can be used in any discipline, whether sports-based or not, that requires analysis and assessment of performance.
