Biology is the study of life and living organisms. Non science majors should study biology to have a better understanding of what goes on in the world around us, and how it affects our bodies. In this class, there were many different topics and issues that I was not aware of prior to taking this class. For example, the food Inc. video revealed how certain food companies produce foods that are harmful to our bodies. This was new information to me, and knowing information like this helps us to avoid these foods and live longer and healthier lives. This biology class also revealed ethical issues in biology such as the Nazi Human Experimentation and the Growth Attenuation case. These ethical topics not only help me to think critically and apply

As the intern began to clean the petri dish that once held such a small but significant life, she wondered how the rest of the scientists took killing an innocent life so lightly. The experiences in the Biology 230 course will certainly continue to influence me in my understand of and how I approach topics in following biology and science courses. The reason why I say this is that the process that information is taught in the lecture course was a bit different from how some other courses would normally be taught. Comparing this course to previously biology and chemistry courses, this course focuses on the why rather than what is the answer. This certainly helps as it makes up need to find a connection to why some is the way it is, which benefits many of the different topics that are taught through the course.…

“Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander,” this means when immoral events happen in the world people need to tell others and stop them rather than stand there and watch the events take place (Skog 57). During the Holocaust, people were taken as prisoners, and the doctors conducted unethical experiments on them rather than treating them. Many people died throughout the Holocaust because of these complex trials. Regular people became victims and experienced experiments performed by doctors solely because of the person’s religion or ethnicity. The bone, muscle, and nerve transplants done without anesthesia, the hypothermia experiments, Josef Mengele’s twin experiments at Auschwitz,…

Most scientists conduct experiments towards a productive, humanitarian goal with the aid of volunteers. However, during the Holocaust, scientists experimented on forced subjects that usually resulted in the loss of their lives. By not acquiring permission of these subjects and causing their deaths, they participated in unethical and immoral activities. Although some prisoners of the Holocaust were not experimented on, they also experienced corrupt treatment in their everyday lives. Many immoral situations occurred during the Holocaust and a few of these can be seen in Tadeusz Borowski’s…

Josef Mengele's disturbing experimentation proves that humans are mostly evil because he killed innocent people, he did not think any of the crimes he committed were inhumane, and he did not give most of his victims anesthesia during the experiments. Dr. Mengele went to the absolute extreme by not only performing life threatening experiments, but by also not feeling any sorrow for his actions and not using anesthetics for surgeries as painful as amputations. What he did to so many innocent Jews, people with disabilities, and others should have haunted him till the day he died. But, sadly that is not what happened because for the most unusual reason, Mengele did not feel as though he did anything wrong. He was responsible for thousands of deaths,…

Families of Jews would be taken from their homes, taken to concentration camps, and be forced to work until they were killed or died. But some of the people would be sent to the labs, where Nazi doctors did horrible experiments on them to find out things for their army or for medical purposes such as hypothermic experiments, genetic experiments, and experiments with fixing fatal injuries. During the Third Reich, the Nazis continually searched for an answer to the “Jewish Question.” Under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, Germany attempted several solutions including discriminatory laws, sterilization, and segregation. In early 1942 the Nazi Party had the answer to their “Jewish question” and called it the Final Solution. What is known as “The Final Solution of the Jewish Question” was the Nazi’s attempt to purify Europe and create their master race by eliminating the Jews of Europe. The Nazi ideology of a “master race” was not solely developed by Hitler, nor were the Nazi euthanasia programs the starting point.…
