The human body is made up of trillions of cells, which normally grow and divide to form new cells as the old ones grow old and die (National Cancer Institute, 2015, paragraph 2). When cancer develops, this process becomes irregular causing cells to live instead of dying and new cells are not formed when needed. These cells then divide constantly and create growths called tumors. Cancerous tumors are malignant, meaning they can spread or invade nearby tissues (National Cancer Institute, 2015, paragraph 5). As these malignant tumors grow, they can break off and travel into other places within the body or lymph system to form new tumors far from the original tumor (National Cancer Institute, 2015, paragraph 5). Unlike malignant tumors, benign tumors do the opposite. They do not spread or invade into nearby tissues, but they can be quite large.
