Nature vs nurture. That’s the question. And it’s one of the oldest questions asked and debated by psychologist today. Which is more powerful? Your genetics or the environment you grew up in. The makeup of your DNA, or the morals your parents drilled into you since birth? This is a question that I myself cannot answer. I am not completely sure how I feel on the topic. Since learning that this would be the topic of our research paper I have had extensive conversations with several of the brilliant minds of my family and friends. And several of the not so brilliant ones. I thought that talking to several people on their opinions, and why they have them, would give me the answer of which one I myself thought was more prominent. In this paper I …show more content…
Nature is your genetics. What genetic code makes up you and who you are? What traits did you get from your mother? What traits came from your father? Which ones are more prominent? Do they make you who you are or are they just the foundation? I do believe that nature plays a big role in who you become in general. There are some traits that are genetic and no matter how hard you try you just can’t fight them. What is classified as nurture? Nurture is how you were raised. What environment you grew up in and the impact it has on you as a person. And the morals that your parents did or did not teach you as a child. We learn everything as a child from what our parents teach us and what we see going on around us. My parents always taught me right from wrong and drilled basic morals into me from the cradle. Because of that I am a very compassionate person and I would never want to hurt anyone in any way.
I watch a lot of criminal minds shows and in them there sometimes criminals who have done unspeakable things but when it was further looked into it was found out that he had a disorder that caused him to not fully understand what is right or wrong. He got the gist of it because his mother always tried to teach him morals and what is right and wrong, but when it came down to it he part of his brain that says ‘don’t do this, this is wrong’ was dysfunctional and therefore he did not fully understand that he was harming people. In this case nature won over

Also in one of the criminal minds shows I watched was a man who once again had psychological problems. As a child he was found going out of his way to hurt animals. After that his parents took him to shrinks and got him help and tried as hard as they could to teach him that hurting things is not right and he should not do it. As an adult he became a counselor himself for children who had his disorder and needed extra help learning right from wrong. He would tell them about his urges to hurt things and cause pain but then he would imagine the pain he wanted to cause being shown on the face of his mother and he would know that he could not do that to anyone. Even though he was born that way he learned to control it with the help of his parents and therapists. In this case nurture won over

Nature refers to being born with certain genes and acting a certain way cause we are coded to act as such. Nurture refers to people acting a certain way because they were trained to be that way or their experiences shape who they are as people. Regardless, both affect how a person would act. Nurture matters more though because we learn from watching how others act and what they tell us to believe from the time we are young. After being told repeatedly to act a certain way, regardless of how our genes tell us to act, we 'll do as we 're told because it is being drilled into our heads to act that way instead.…
