In the movie, the main character, Vincent, always dreamed of being in space ever since he was a little boy. Sadly, his heart problems and life expectancy of 30.2 years made his dream impossible. Aside from that, he also received many negative comments about his dream. But Vincent did not give up. Vincent kept a healthy diet and exercise to fight his life expectancy. To get into the space program Vincent bought Jerome, a healthy person’s DNA to get in the space program called “Gattaca” since his DNA shows “invalid” and Jerome’s DNA shows “valid” Although buying others DNA has many consequence, Vincent gave all his commitment towards the program to make his dream possible. Vincent pretended to be Jerome, used his blood everyday to get into the program, and used his urine for random checkups. In the end of the movie, he did the impossible, he not only lived past his life expectancy, he also achieved his life-long dream of going to outer space. This movie proves that the genes inside of you that planned what your life is going to be can changed, like Vincent’s life. He was only planned to live for about 30 years by his genetics, and his dream was a joke. However, he’s a fighter and fought his heart problems by keeping a healthy diet and proper exercising. You may ask “what are designer babies?” Well, designer babies are when the parents of a baby can choose the phenotypes, also known as your traits, such as eye color, height, hair color, and many more. Although having to pick your own baby’s trait would be nice, there are indeed some ethical and moral issues when doing so. One obvious problem is the cost, the practice is not going to be cheap. As a result, not everyone is going to afford this cost which can lead to a society gap, where designer babies will be smarter and better than ordinary babies. An example of a society gap is the movie “Gattaca”, when Vincent, being the first born child without any genetic selection and Anton being the second child and the designed baby. Because of this, Vincent was born with heart problem, on the other hand, Anton was healthy, perfect child. Now, imagine a place where there is a bunch of children like Vincent and Anton. If this place did somehow exist, a society gap will appear between the non-designed babies and the designed babies like the rich and the poor. Another moral or ethical issue is disappearance of our own unique individuality. If you designed your own baby, the baby is not your baby with your genetics, the baby is actually your “dream child” with all the person traits you desire.
