The nature versus nurture debate has continued for many years. This debate consists of whether children’s genetics or their environment primarily cause the way they behave. Nature focuses on the genetic factors; whereas, nurture emphasizes the environmental factors and experience of the child. People have debated on whether the nature or the nurture factor has the biggest effect on the behavior of children. This sparks my main question: are children’s personalities shaped more heavily by genetics or by their upbringing? The nature theory states that children behave the way they do due to their genes. More and more studies have shown that genetics has become a bigger reason for children’s thoughts and behavior. The way that children behave can be led back to their genetic makeup. Researchers at the University of Minnesota led a study with the Jim twins to see if their genetics played an important role in determining how they behave. The twins were separated at only 4 weeks old and then reunited at the age of 39. While separated, the researchers studied the twins. The researchers, from the University of Minnesota, found that “they both suffered from tension headaches, were prone to nail biting, smoked Salem cigarettes, drove the same type of car and even vacationed at the same beach in Florida” (Lewis). The explanation for these behaviors must be because of the genes that they both possess. They found that both twins shared the same habits and also acted alike. These twins, even though raised separately, still acted the same and had the same habits. That shows the effect of genes on the way that children act.
