On the one hand, Ralph and Piggy revealed a nurturing mentality and it progressed throughout the novel. Ralph built shelters for his supporters; it amazed me because this showed that he genuinely cared for and wanted to protect his clan (Golding 54). He used Piggy 's spectacles to light fires in the forest; the fires were used to make smoke and the smoke was a signal that would help ships or aircrafts detect human life on the island (Golding 40). Ralph specifically made the fire to help them get rescued, nothing else mattered to him. He believed that they could find fruit and water on the island, there was no need to abuse the power of the fire. Ralph realized that they needed to be rescued as soon as they possibly could because they could not live forever. The boys were stranded on an island and the only source they could rely on was their knowledge. Of course, the boys did not all agree on one thing; their objectives of living and being rescued were scattered (Golding 45). The boys ' age group consisted of six year olds to twelve year olds and this did not help with their knowledge on the way a society should be run. At this age, children fall into the act of following what others do rather than standing out and leading a group. This became very apparent in the novel because the boys either followed Ralph or Jack and never suggested plans that would help them get to where they wanted to be. It is critical that children are taught to express their opinion and let their voice be heard because the story may have taken a toll if more boys made what they believed notable.
Everyone needs guidance in their lives, no matter the circumstance; it helps society to function properly in a well organized manner. The power of the situation took control in this novel and it was difficult for Ralph and Jack to compromise. Biological factors come to help to a certain extent and that was clear when Jack was able to gain enough followers to start his own clan and began hunting. Hunting was not the best choice, but the boys turned into savages and hardly paid any attention to how society should actually be
