Nature versus nurture is a wide know debate, asking what human nature is based on, what you are born with or how you are raised. Some believe that evilness is in your human nature and that you are born with it. Nature is genetics. A person’s nature is their height, size, hair, eyes, and race. Also, nature is instincts, behaviors that are formed without learning, evolved as an adaption to specific situations. But, others believe that you are born with nothing and evil is a result of the way you are raised and what you are exposed to as a child, nurture. When the boys start chanting about killing the pig, Ralph started to change and want to get to the pig too. The author describes, "The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering,” (Golding 114). After being on the island for so long, it was not human nature that was making him have the desire to kill. Being around the savages and all of the violence on the island was beginning to rub off on him and that is what was taking over him. This shows that evil is nurture, not nature. Also, the People article, “Fatal Romance”, by Johnny Dodd, shows evilness in humans. Conrad Roy the third was debating whether or not to end his life and he was texting his girlfriend, Michelle Carter. Michelle texted him, “You're ready and prepared. . . All you have to do is turn on the generator and you [will] be free and happy” (Dodd 1). The reason that Michelle pushed her boyfriend so hard to commit suicide was because she felt unpopular and thought she would get attention from being a grieving girlfriend. Growing up in a town that prized popularity, she felt like she needed attention and to be popular and this was the way. She was not born with these traits, but they came with what she grew up with and around, another example that evilness comes from nurture rather than nature. The article is about “A group of teenagers [that] laughed and watched as a man struggled in the water of a pond,” (Chokshi 1). It was not said if the teenagers had nothing physiologically wrong with them, but they thought it was funny or entertaining to watch and record while this helpless man drowned in a small pond in Florida. This is not in their nature, they were not born finding a man drowning funny. It had to be the boy's nurture that made them make these decisions. Also, in “Fatal Romance” Michelle confesses, “I could have stopped it. I was on the phone with him and he got out of the car because it was working and he got scared and I [expletive] told him to get back in,” (Dodd 1). Caring so much about attention, Michelle pushed her boyfriend to stay in the car in order for her to get the attention she desired. It was clear that he was irrelevant to her if it meant she would get attention. In conclusion, heartlessness is a taught characteristic, rather than something you are born
