he Nature Vs Nurture debate is a pair of opposing viewpoints, concerned with the extent to which particular aspects of behaviour are either inherited (genetics) or acquired (characteristics). It is known that a particular combination of our genes are inherited from our parents. For example, the colour of our eyes, hair and pigmentation of the skin are all part of our genetic makeup, determined from our parents. This is the nature side of the debate, arguing that the coding of our genes determines different traits. Also arguing that attributes like sexual orientation, intelligence and personality could be too coded in our DNA.

The nurture side of the debate would claim that environmental factors are the real origins of our behaviour. Empiricists see the human mind as a ‘blank slate’ when we are born, that gradually fills with and as a result of experience. Claiming that our behavioural differences are psychological characteristics are a result of observation and how individuals are raised. Environmental factors relate to such things as the media, education, friends and cultural norms. (N Hayes, 2000)

It is argued that gender and sex are different things, for instance you may be biologically born male but you could identify with female characteristics.
