Pertaining to the debate of nature versus nurture, I believe that nurture has a greater effect on the
development of the personality and action of a child. One can quote study after study and give statistic
after statistic; however, I believe that personal experience speaks volumes.
There are definitely some things that I know are predestined such as hair color and eye color. I have
met several people over the past few years whose lives have given support to my belief that nurture
outweighs nature. My own life is an example of this. Many times I have been told that the people you
hang out with shape the person you become. Of course, I didn’t believe that. I quickly found out this is
true.

Excited to have other teens to hang out with, I
started spending more time outside playing basketball than inside my room. That was great at first.
Was there anything wrong with playing basketball? No, there was nothing wrong with it. The people I
was hanging out with, though, behaved in a different manner than the way I was raised. My personality
began to change. I didn’t believe it when my father said something to me about it. Then one day I
found myself sitting in a detective’s office. I had been raised that it was wrong to take things that were
not mine. However, after spending an ample amount of time with boys who did those things, I found
myself being tempted to do the same. It became easy to justify my actions because everyone around
me was doing the same thing. This is a prime example of how those who were nurturing me affected
and influenced my life.
Often times you hear the saying, “Garbage in, garbage out.” This is another example of how nurture
overcomes nature. It is not in a child’s genes to cuss or say nasty things. However, if that same child is
raised in that type of environment, that child will quickly find themselves getting into trouble at
