After reading the assigned chapters, what is your understanding on the nature vs nurture debate? How do you understand each concept and its role in the development of the human being and more specifically gender role development? Nature vs nurture, to me, is the comparison between the learnings children obtain from their biological makeup (sex) and the things they learn overtime through socialization at home and in other social institutions. The debate in this is whether kids turn out the way that they do because they were just born that way or if it’s the things they learn overtime from their families, peers, or other social sources. Honestly, I can see both sides of the debate because I can explain each situation, but I agree with one more than the other. Before transferring to Fort Hays, I played softball at Hutchinson Community College. On our team, we had a girl that was a lesbian, but her story was something I hadn’t heard before. When someone asked her why she chose to be a lesbian, she very calmly told us her story. Simply enough, she said she knew she was different from a very young age. She told us that she believed that she was not a girl, but that she was a boy. She wore boy clothes, she played rough outside in the rugged Alaskan scenery, and she never enjoyed all the things that her little sister enjoyed. She tried to fit in with other girls by dating boys in middle school and high school but she just never felt right. Once she got into college, she explored…
