In Thicker Than Blood: How Racial Statistics Lie, Tukufu Zaberi demonstrates that “African colonialism and enslavement were two important moments in this process of racialization” (2001). These two events changed societies perspective regarding physical differences. Zaberi describes two types of economic systems that developed during the fifteenth and sixteenth century, but the most crucial one in understanding racial classification is “the export economy of large-scale plantations producing staple articles such as sugar” (2001). Gender is assigned at birth according to physical sex, giving the child no preference for how they want to live their life. This decision made for them governs how they act, dress and talk.
