The complex topic of nature versus nurture is deciding whether a person’s development is predisposed in their DNA or if one’s actions are influenced by their environment and life experiences. Trying to decide between these two proves nearly impossible because each side has good points. An example of this was the murder of Eric Morse which is the epitome of the difficulty that comes with nature versus nurture. On October 13, 1994 ten year old Jesse Rankins and eleven years old Tyckeece Johnson dropped five year old Eric Morse out of the fourteenth floor of the Ida B. Wells housing projects. When Siobhan told Christopher that he can confide in her if he is feeling sad about finding out his mother had an affair with Mr.Shears. Christopher responded by saying that he doesn’t feel sad about it because his mother is dead and Mr.Shears isn’t around anymore. The reason why he shows such nonchalance towards his mother’s affair is because essentially there is no logical reason for him to put forth feelings for a non existing situation. Since his mother is dead so the affair no longer exist. Another example is at the beginning of the book with the murder of Mrs.Shears dog. A police officer apprehended him and instead of being fearful of being arrested Christopher feels safe and calm. Because of his nature he understands patterns and numbers because they are logical and make sense. Therefore uniforms like the police officers makes him feel serene. Christopher exhibits these odd behaviors by nature because children with autism process the world around them differently. This can cause communication and social disabilities. Which is why Christopher has trouble understanding social cues and facial expressions. But his life and academic teacher nurtures him so he can understand how to be more social and comfortable with talking to new
