Ralph already seem to have all the power because he pretty much determined who could have been chief, and no one said anything against this. The idea of natural selection and separating the weak and the strong been almost completely removed from civilized living because of an "over-compensation", society used to treat people that were different in some aspects (skin color or religion) poorly, but people soon started to realized that this was not very good so we started trying to treat everyone the same, even the weak. When these boys get put into a savage setting, they separate the weak from the strong by calling them different names. "The smaller boys were know to the generic title of "littluns". The decreased size from Ralph down was gradual.... Human Nature in Lord of the Flies Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is a captivating narrative in which the reader lives through the trials and tribulations of a society set up and run by a group of marooned British teens. Golding believes that the basic nature of the individual is evil. The group ultimately proves this thesis by their actions. The evils of the individual are shown through the actions of the group’s hunter Jack, the murders of two members of the society, Simon and Piggy, the attempted murder of the group’s leader Ralph, and the ultimate destruction of the island. Jack has a natural longing to be number one, he was not satisfied with being the leader of the hunters, and this ultimately caused many of…

Adaptation is a way that an animal’s body adjusts to help it survive in its environment; rapid adaptation usually taking place when there is a sudden change in location or lifestyle for an animal. It’s been scientifically proven that humans, being mammals, also have this occur to them on both small and large scales. Night and Lord of the Flies are both tremendous examples of humans reverting to their primal instincts in order to survive, and both stories fixate on inexperienced children as children cannot properly converse or support themselves, causing them to risk their survival and pressuring them to make extreme decisions. Both of these pieces of literature include examples of physiological changes in humans in order to keep them healthy, emotional contagion amongst the group of characters so as to form a community, and a large focus on the natural fight or flight response when subjected to immense stress. Accordingly, all are adaptations that help the…

Would we follow the rules like Piggy, Simon and Ralph, or like Jack Merridew in Lord of the Flies, seek power and abandon the rules of civilization? William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, suggests that the pull of animal instinct competes with the rules of civilization and eventually overpowers it when humans are put in a situation of survival. Jack is a perfect example of how strong the pull of animal instinct is. Jack is one of the oldest boys on the island.…

Modern societies face increasing barbaric acts of violence, often against humanity. William Golding explores the reasoning behind conflict in a brilliant work of allegorical literature. Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, written whilst the world faced the anxiety of the Cold War, uses various literary devices and themes to portray humanity’s innate tendency towards savagery and the idea that it isn’t human nature to create and obey rules and laws, rather they exist solely as the boundary that restrains modern societies from descending into chaos. Firstly, one of the most prominent themes in the novel is order and chaos.…
