A gift from a god is considered a divine item and must always be returned. “...binding inside the winds that howl from every quarter” (Homer 156). Before boats were powered they had sails which would direct the boat forward and the crew members of the boat would direct the boat. The wind is just as important to society then and today. The wind gifted to Odysseus was used for self-propulsion to help bring Odysseus and his men back to Ithaca. Curiosity and jealousy overran all the crew members and so they took the bag of divine wind and opened it unleashing the very fate Odysseus tried to avoid. The wind is used as an indication of possible storms or fronts coming in. “There’s a real likelihood of major, major earthquake in the next 10, 15, 20 years” (Yan 2). Given past experiences and information about historical disasters, scientists use this information to predict upcoming ones. They use the information they get as a source for hints of upcoming disasters. They can provide early warnings and signs which give time to save more lives. The ancient Greeks never consider any possible warnings about a god about to start a thunderstorm. Science is what identifies those warnings and picks up every single piece of information it can get in order to provide fair warning. What the ancient Greeks couldn’t explain they would think about divine beings controlling their fate.. “...it’s Olympian …show more content…
In Odysseus’s travels, he encountered a major storm blowing him off course. “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” (Newton 1). Having killed the cattle of Helios the men got food and leather. Furthermore, the downside was that they were to be punished for not listening to Odysseus or considering the fact they will be punished for killing the cows. Upon their departure, Odysseus and his foolish men ran into a storm made by the mighty Zeus sending them far away once more. Science is the study of the world in which god doesn’t exist leading scientists to hunt down evidence of the cause of natural phenomena. “Then, then in the same breath Zeus hit the craft with a lightning-bolt and thunder” (Homer 209). Without evidence, there is no theory behind the cause of the thunderstorm. In the eyes of Odysseus, he saw Zeus while in the eyes of a scientist they would only see an anomaly of a storm suddenly picking up for over the ocean. Humans use science to explain natural events amongst the Earth and religion is used to explain all anomalies and supernatural events, furthermore, both provide an insight into the future given past events. “And is the long-dreaded “Big One” that could devastate California coming soon?” (Yan 1). Through science and technology, humans have discovered more and more about the natural world. Evidence such as records, documents, graphs,
