During the 15th Century when the Spanish conquered the Americas. They deliberately changed the way of life for the Native peoples, The story of the Native people is a story of Hope, Courage and Survival (WeShallRemain).The Native peoples survival has proven to be that of a difficult one till this day.
Since the Spanish conquered the Americas not only did Natives lose their land,culture,traditions they were also abused and forced to take in a new religion. This is one example of the US Government’s attempt to assimilate Native Americans into white, mainstream culture by stripping natives of their heritage and cultural traditions. The goal of Indian boarding schools was to use education as a means to assimilate Native American children into white society. It was founded by a US Army officer by the name of Richard Pratt and his motto was “ kill the indian and save the man” (Gallow, L, 2017). One of the first things taken from Native students upon entering government boarding schools in the 19th century was their native language: children were punished for speaking their language aloud, and English was enforced as the only way to communicate.
