In the Eastern Woodlands, most Native Americans combined hunting and fishing with farming. These were the ways Native Americans obtained their food. By the 1500s, Native Americans had established a wide array of cultures and languages. Also, they had developed economies and lifestyles to suit their particular environments. Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas was a major turning point in history. It opened up new areas of exploration and provided vast wealth through trade for Europeans. The event was devastating, however, for native peoples of the Americas, their cultures were changed or destroyed by war, disease, and enslavement.
