While reading the book I felt as though I was sitting in a teepee surrounded by Native Americans sharing their tales with each other. Sandoz really captures the essence of Native American culture. She brings in her audience by focusing on one historically significant man. She then uses that character to bring in Native American culture and their struggle. As a future educator, the book also caught my attention because it starts with Crazy Horse at a young age. Starting from the beginning of Crazy Horse’s life gave a solid background and time to connect with the main character. She shares historical facts with a sound knowledge of the beliefs and the culture of the Sioux people and furthermore shares the emotions that took place during those turbulent decades. I think that her book is so well known and widely recommended because it is not just battles or the shifting movements of the Sioux that she deems as important, but also those intervals between historical events, the understanding, and emotions of the people and their leaders. We can not begin to imagine all that the Native Americans had to endure during this time, but by reading Crazy Horse we get a good picture of what went
