Some disadvantages as she mentions in the poem however, are that Americans see you as an outsider and Mexicans also see them as an outside, so they almost have no place in the world. I don’t think it is her intent to make it sound like an advantage.
I think the title is appropriate because they are legal citizens but also are of a different nationality, although we all are they are able to speak their foreign language as well and are more in touch with their roots. The “token” means they don’t really belong to either country according to the other citizens and they are just used at times as somebody to blame for their problems.
It simply gives the answer as to why we think something like black kids who aren’t dressed nicely playing classical music is so amazing. I don’t think it is as effective because it gives just one answer to why we’re amazed and I think that should be more left to the reader to decide why something like this pulls us in.
