How is Native American Art represented in Colorado History?
2. What is your answer to the project 's driving question?
Native American Art is represented in Colorado History through the various types of art that have influenced the everyday lives of both Native American and non-native Coloradans. Prior to the colonialization of the United States by Europeans, Native Americans engaged in a robust trade through a series of middlemen who that allowed Native Americans in the four corners area to trade with Native Americans as Far North south as Canada, as far West as the California, as far south as Mexico, and as east towards the Atlantic. First, we had to identify the problem (or project) we wanted to address, then we had to generate some ideas, and select a solution. Mike Pritts initially suggested that we utilize and develop a partnership with the Pioneer Museum. Having visited the Pioneer Museum several times previously, I suggested that we focus on how Native American Art evolved due to their contact with European and early American trappers, miners, and settlers. The Pioneer Museum, a history Museum, was a good tie in for Mike and myself since we are both future Social Studies teachers who love history. As a result, our group decided to change our focus from the evolution of Native American Art, to the influence of Native American Art on Colorado History.
Then, we decided that we wanted to develop a lesson plan or activity that could assist local sixth grade level students in learning about the influence of Native American Art in Colorado History at local Museums and other facilities that display Native American Art. We also decided that the students would develop their own piece of artwork inspired by the Native American Art they viewed as a test of learning. The students would have the option of being able to create whatever type of art they desired.
After making our decision, we had to visit the Pioneer Museum in order to ensure that were on display that were relevant to our project and make coordination with key players who could help our project come to fruition. Following the selection of our solution, we began to construct our project. We used the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) Project Design Overview to frame our lesson, selected our rubrics for evaluating our student’s projects, and then constructed the project board that we would use to present our project.
