The Native American Genocide that swept America
“The Shining” is a classic horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick, released on May 23, 1980. The movie takes place in the home of the three main characters Jack Torrance, Wendy Torrance and Danny Torrence aka Doc. Jack goes for an Interview and ends up getting the job during the winter as the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. The Overlook Hotel is known to have many Native American patterns on the floor and curtains even on Wendy’s clothes. Danny’s imaginary friend Tony can predict what’s going to happen , sense when something bad is going to happen, and overhear conversations that his parents are having without being near them. Jack then gets the job and as they settle into the Overlook Hotel

The Shining” also includes rugs, paintings, curtains, and some of Wendy’s clothing with Native American patterns. Jack mentions in the movie “The White Man’s Burden” which relates to the Overlook Hotel being built on top of a Native American burial ground. Jack also mentions “The Donner Party” and explains to Danny what occurred during that time. Jack describes people freezing to death and then becoming cannibals to survive while traveling to the West. This scene in the movie relates to the ending when Jack freezes to death trying to search for Danny just like people who traveled West froze to death traveling to California in the search for gold. Dick is the only African American character to be seen, this can be because he’s symbolizing African Americans and Native Americans being victims of racist violence. Dick is also the first to be killed by Jack who is white. Danny and Dick both have the same “special talent”, this talent is significant to the movie poster because “The Shining” means being able to talk without using your mouth. “The Tide of Terror that Swept America” means white supremacy since it’s mostly white characters taking control of the overlook hotel. Since this movie is titled “The Shining” i feel like this is because the agricultural details and patterns having to do with Native Americans loss of lives and land. The Native American accessories throughout the Overlook Hotel may symbolize the white people having no sympathy nor remorse for taken land and on top of it built a Hotel where thousands of innocent Native American lives were lost trying to defend their territory.
