Nationalism in my opinion is a very essential asset in today’s globalized world. To start off with you need to understand what nationalism is compared to patriotism since people often confuse the two. Nationalism is “a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries.” (Merriam-Webster). While Patriotism on the other hand is “love that people feel for their country” (Merriam-Webster). So see I personally think that it is better for people to feel patriotic about their country rather than feel nationalistic about it. My reasoning being because nationalism is more of a negative thing causing people to think that their country is better than another

Nationalism can bring people together in a country because of several common interest. People will become closer together based just on their love for their country, the economy of the country, and the possibility of certain government candidates. There are lots of different examples of nationalism in history, some of the ones I will be speaking about are The Greek War of Independence, Nationalism after September 11th, 2001, events after Pearl Harbor, and Nazi Germany, one of the most known cases of massive group nationalism where people were manipulated to allow Hitler to do terrible …show more content…
You have also seen that nationalism can be very dangerous and that is why it is so powerful, it can be used to turn a whole country into allowing people to do horrific things, cause a prejudice that last for years, turn a country against itself, and cause countries to go to war sacrificing the lives of thousands. That is why I decided to write about both sides of nationalism because if you focus on just the positives of nationalism it seems amazing or if you focus on the negatives it seems to be a terrible thing. That is the point exactly, nationalism has lots of benefits and lots of negatives. It would take years to explain every example of nationalism but with all examples of nationalism there is always a clear fact, there will always be positives and negatives but whether it is an asset or hindrance I can only decide that for myself, you will have to decide for yourself I’m just trying to give you more information to help expand your knowledge on the subject and allow you to make an unbiased
