Currently, there is a total of 73.8 million children under the age of 18 years old in the
United States. Out of that number, 225 out of every 100,000 were arrested in 2010. The great
News is that the rate of youth offenders has dropped since 1994 (by 55%) but even with that reduction, it just shows that the number of youth arrested is still at an alarming rate (Juvenile Delinquency Statistics, n.d.). In this body of work, two different programs and reduction efforts will be described, the determination of sociological theories that shape the
City of Miami-Dade public policy for delinquency prevention and ideas from the author that would improve juvenile delinquency efforts with examples.

In 2008, the Miami-Dade County Prevention Initiative was formulated to combat these risk, including those who may be at risk of arrest and convictions. This program is a 90 day program. It provides children with psychological services to identify key issues whether in the community or at home. Children can be brought in through community outreach leaders, parents, adults who are concerned and school officials. It addresses various issues such as: Negative Peer Association, Disciplinary Issues, Truancy, Anger Management and much more. This program also provides former attendees the opportunity to mentor someone else at the completion of the program. Reduction efforts have been made to ensure that no type of violence occurs in the community by our youth. One of those methods currently is called Miami-
Dade Anti-Gang Strategy. This program is designed to address issues that are involved in the youth being sought out and ultimately joining gangs, identify ways to input positive influences via peers and environmental influences that cause violence among our youth. With the help …show more content…

According to Miami-Dade Juvenile Services, the rate of offenders who goes through a program and reoffends is at 27% as of 2012. That shows that continuous efforts need to be made to ensure that the person(s) will not feel the need to recommit the same or different offenses. The only way someone can join the initiative is if an adult or school official recommends that they join. There needs to be a way that if someone sees a crime committed, feeling pressured or even approached by a youth offender to commit the same acts to have an open door policy where they can come in on their own, anonymously or otherwise and seek assistance.
