The ability for agencies within the Intelligence Community to share information horizontally through the use of Fusion Centers has proven both effective and beneficial to Americans everywhere. In only the last five years, Fusion Centers have been credited with “preventing, protecting against, and responding to criminal and terrorist threats,” (DHS 2015) all across the country. Although they assist with the counter-terrorism fight, it is important to identify that that is not their primary mission. The primary mission of Fusion Centers is to “receive, analyze, gather, produce, and disseminate a broad array of threat-related information and actionable intelligence to appropriate law enforcement and homeland security agencies” (DHS 2015).…

Building 1143 is a challenge in of itself with over 32,000 square feet of area, 25 entries and exits, 12 corridors, two auditoriums, 38 classrooms, 54 offices, large amounts of open space in four common areas, and most of the walls of the building are actual windows. A positive aspect is there are many areas, such as the classrooms, that are optimal to establish a barricade between individuals and the active shooter during lockdown procedures. Additionally, with 25 entries and exits there are plenty of options for personnel who want to escape an active shooter situation. These positive features of building 1143 are important for all individuals to know and could result in lives saved, however, the layout also presents a complex challenge to mitigate or deter an active shooter threat. Features of building 1143…
4. If Marco’s application is refused, he is not permitted to appeal to the Immigration Appels Division (IAD) of the Immigration and Refugee Board. The IAD hears four types of appeals which are, sponsorship appeals, removal orders, residency obligations, and minster’s appeals of an IAD decision. In Katrina’s Wake: Rethinking the Military’s Role in Domestic Emergencies Regional Commands SFC Karissa M. Maradol 17 April 2018 In Katrina’s Wake: Rethinking the Military’s Role in Domestic Emergencies Regional Commands Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating natural disasters in American history, amplified by human error. There are National Response Plans for every possible disaster whether it is homeland security or natural disasters. During Katrina, the mass confusion was a result of gross underestimation of the potential threat and a poor understanding of the different levels of responsibility. Currently, Regional Command and North Command only oversee portions of the relief effort and only provide assistance…
I believe that one of the significant deficiencies from the 9/11 Commission Report was the deficiency of shared intelligence information between, local, state and federal agencies related to homeland security. Before 9/11, law enforcement intelligence was compartmentalized and disjointed. The FBI mainly dealt with domestic threats and the CIA mostly focused on foreign threats. I believe that the most significant function developed was “receiving and analyzing law enforcement information, intelligence, and other information relating to homeland security within the federal government and between the federal government and state and local governments” (Oliver, 2007, pg. 75). Once the 9/11 attack occurred, it was evident that the national security required direct coordination amongst the agencies, for any recovery efforts.…
This review focuses on the two later sections, analysis of the failures and recommendations. The Commission identified four kinds of failures in the management of the terrorist threat before the 9/11:…
: (1) Provide an overview of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). (2) Describe the Federal, State and Local roles in the deployment of the SNS. (3) Review the main functions of the SNS with focus areas on medical countermeasures (MCMs) dispensing efforts. (4) Discuss the importance of partnerships. Presentation: I first provided a historical of the evolution and deployments of the Strategic National Stockpile (9/11, anthrax mailings, Katrina).…
There has been a restructuring of internal investigative bodies, a rethinking of the organization of relief agencies, and the production of new and better guidelines for law enforcement officials across the country. While there has been a blizzard of activity and the creation of many positions, charts and graphs there is also a complete neglect of several key factors that could substantially affect America's homeland security. Those attempting to provide for the full time, full scale security of the United States need to look at fixing things that are broken and considering these five ways to improve homeland security not yet being fully implemented. 1.Make our country education centered. All of the Homeland Security advisories, warnings and bulletins in the world are not going to keep our nation safe if there are still millions of our citizens who are unable to read and act on what they have been told.…
With the spiralling effects, the military focused on the combatant commander (USNORTHCOM). U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Pacific Command were charged with supporting domestic civil authorities through Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (high yield) (CBRNE) Consequence Management (CM) operations when the President deems necessary to do so (2014). When joint forces are teaming up for domestic CBRNE CM they are supporting civil authorities which falls under the incident management and functions in the accordance with the National Response Framework (NRF) within the National Incident Management System (NIMS) framework (2014). The Incident Command…
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a department of the federal government tasked with protecting America and its territory from terrorism, securing the borders, securing cyberspace, administering immigration laws, and ensuring disaster resilience (“Our Mission”, 2015). With the assistance of twenty-two other agencies and departments, the DHS has successfully accomplished its mission for fifteen years. The National Strategy for Homeland Security is the starting point for all homeland security related policies and procedures (“National Strategy”, n.d.). This single document sets the guidelines for other regulations such the Quadrennial Review and DHS Budget.…
To ensure our safety under the national security, we had to have partnership trust within our state, federal and local agencies. This made sharing information effective, that’s why we focus on the post 9-11 threat environment. To support preparedness efforts, there’re many of governmental, commercial, and non-governmental organizations that provide officials with homeland security alerts and updates along with state level government have fusion centers that integrate and analyze homeland security information. “The 9/11 terrorist attacks focused public attention on the need for better information sharing among intelligence, law enforcement, and emergency management agencies” (example 2016). The 9/11 Commission was a direct result in the agencies providing incentives for sharing, to restore a better balance between shared task, knowledge and security.…

Intelligence in Homeland Security Introduction After the attack of 9/11 on the United States the Nation learned there were many areas that needed improvement in regards to the security of the homeland. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had to take into account the lessons learned from 9/11, especially the shortfalls that were seen in intelligence gathering and make some major changes. The DHS is not the only agency that is responsible for gathering information for the Nation’s safety, there are many different national agencies that provide intelligence for homeland security. Some of the National agencies include offices that many have heard of like Customs and Border Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard or the Secret Service, but there are other National agencies that contribute that most Americans may not know about.…
