The National Instant Criminal Background Check system (NICS)
The NCIS was invented by FFL (Federal firearms licensees). The reason for creating the FFL was for the public to be able to contact them by phone or via any electronic means regarding any form of information whether the passing around of firearm will violate the section 922 of title 18, United States Code, or State law. (FBI). 18 U.S code and 922 are laws that are contains the unlawful acts listed by the United States. Some of which include, except a manufacturer, dealer, importer is licensed then it is unlawful for anyone to receive any ammunition in interstate or foreign commerce. The NIC administered by the FBI and collects data of individuals that are ineligible to purchase firearm. These individuals are people who have some kind of mental illness ; would be found insane in the court of law and who are seen as a danger to themselves and to others therefore not facing any jail time . It is important to know if these individuals are involuntarily committed to mental institution (Office of federal register 2013). Most information taken by the NICS are very limited to the names of the individuals that are ineligible to purchase a firearm. The NICS do not submit the full of information of the individual subjected to mental illness. only information about basic facts like date of birth, the codes for the submitting entity and the prohibited category that applies to the individual (Office of the Federal Register 2013).
