Everyday, all around the world, there are people who are both desiring to change and are changing their national identities, thereby becoming immigrants in other countries. With this global movement of people around the world, in and out of countries, there are advantages and disadvantages, both to the donor country and the receiving country. In this essay, I have chosen to discuss whether changing national identities, by immigrants and refugees alike, is a benefit or not to the American nation, and why this may be, since this issue is complex due to arguments that come from many different perspectives.

This is because the immigrants may like to keep in touch with their families and friends back in their original country. This could also encourage tourism, since the families and friends may be encouraged to visit the US. Tourism is a great generator of both jobs and cash income for the US, since the the tourists will be likely to spend money in the country. Without the tax revenue generated by tourism and travel, every US household would have to pay an additional $1,093 in taxes. In 2013 alone, the tourism industry in the US brought about $2.1 trillion and supported 14.9 million jobs. In addition to this, in 2012, each overseas visitor to the US spent approximately $4,500 and stayed an average of 17 nights. This would help the American nation, since it means that there is a lot of extra money coming in to support the economy. In 2013, those who were 65 or older, made up 14.1% of the US population, which amounts to 44.7 million people. This is equivalent to one in every seven Americans being over 65. This means that there will be a younger population that are coming in, who are prepared to work and earn a living, to help pay for the older generation. The younger generation that are coming in may also have new, fresh ideas with them that could help with the production of goods for example. This may mean that international trade could open up as a result, meaning that the immigrants have helped to increase the global focus of the American nation.
On the other hand, there are a few disadvantages of having immigrants come into the American nation. To begin with, there is always present the possibility of terrorists entering the country. These could then be used, in the absolute extreme, to set up terrorist groups in the US that could potentially cause a lot of trouble. This is seen in the recent shooting event, where the woman involved was granted a work visa, yet turned out to be a terrorist, with links with the ISIS group.
Also, there is the potential of having immigrants who are not willing to be loyal to their new country. This could result in trouble being caused, especially if we were to go to war. This is because there would then be people within America that are fighting America, which could result in spies
