National Honors Society: Outstanding High School Student

Decent Essays
NHS Essay National Honors Society recognizes outstanding high school students who have portrayed excellence in areas of leadership, service, character, and scholarship. I have exemplified in all these areas. Initially, I volunteered at Asian American Civic Association for my whole sophomore year and completed about 50 hours of community service. I was a Youth Council there and I participated in two projects. The first project I worked on was Clean- Up Chinatown. The goal of this project was to create long lasting changes to keep Chinatown clean. As a council member, I attended meetings and discussed ideas with other members. We, then, surveyed the people in Chinatown and collected data. The second project was the AACA Youth Players

I believe I am a good candidate to be selected for the Robert Vela High School National Honor Society because I am a dedicated student. My grades do reflect my abilities as a student, but my work ethic in the co-curricular activities that I participate is what really defines it as I put a lot of time and effort into them. In U.I.L. calculator applications, which is the main activity that I partake in, I sacrifice my time almost everyday after school and sometimes my lunch period throughout the school year, as well as the majority of my Saturdays to compete and practice. Not a lot of students would give up this much time and effort unless they are very dedicated. This also reflects my leadership and character as one has to work and communicate…

The National Honor Society is an organization that acknowledges and congratulates students with high educational standings and certain characteristics. NHS looks for people with traits such as leadership, people who are outgoing in their community, and people with a great quality of character. If I am selected to be in this group, I would contribute to the growth of NHS by spreading information about what NHS is to other students and teachers. Before I got this application, I didn’t even know what NHS was and what you do once you are in it. I want other people to know the importance of this group and how it can look good not just for when you apply to colleges, but to yourself as well.…

Some of my biggest accomplishments have been achieved because of one honor I received years ago. At age 7 I was admitted into the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program. The TAG program is for unique students with an IQ over 120 who aren't being challenged by the school's typical curriculum. This program has presented some of the most delightful challenges and rewarded some of the sweetest accomplishments to my peers and I. The influence of the TAG program can be divided into three different factions: peer competition, challenges from my instructor, and diverse experiences outside of the classroom.…

I am qualified to be a part of the 2016 National Honor Society because of my hard work and willingness to do anything for anyone. As an Honors student, I work hard for the grades I earn and study for hours. In my free time I try to do as much as I can for anyone else. Working hard for my goals may come along with a challenge, but I can overcome anything as long as I put my mind to it. Over the summer, I found myself taking care of someone else’s pets and house.…

Community is important to me. I grew up in a small town where you knew your neighbors, and chances were that you lived down the street from at least one of your teachers. Where every summer Saturday, the entire block would meet in somebody’s backyard- a fire would be lit, and all of us kids would roast marshmallows and hotdogs, and play on the wooden swing-set, playing out stories and adventures. My community wasn’t just a place where I lived and went to school- it was a family.…

National Junior Honor Society has been a dream for me over the course of my school career. However, I never thought I’d be able to make it come true. During my life I’ve seen notable examples of leadership, scholarship, service, citizenship, and character in this world and they’ve influenced me as a person and through NJHS I can make each of these pillars more of a part of my life. Leadership, to me, is being someone anyone can look up to. You don’t have to be the strongest, or the smartest, or any of those.…

As a current eleventh grade student, I believe that I have exceeded in demonstrating all four qualities of the National Honor Society. With my previous experience in the National Junior Honor Society, I have bestowed the ideals to my community as of the beginning of my middle school career. This has led me to take pride in the community around me and help create a greater society with the foundation that the National Junior Honor Society has introduced to me. The quality of Service is an ideal that I can directly relate to through personal experience, therefore creating significance in my life.…

American high schools must prepare students to succeed in a competitive world. But the intensely competitive process of selecting a class valedictorian hurts students more than it helps them. Most high schools have only one valedictorian, which often leads to bitter competition among high-achieving students. In some places, students begin plotting in middle school how to outdo their classmates. The result can be broken friendships, diminished collaboration, and a tense atmosphere.…
