I believe I am a good candidate to be selected for the Robert Vela High School National Honor Society because I am a dedicated student. My grades do reflect my abilities as a student, but my work ethic in the co-curricular activities that I participate is what really defines it as I put a lot of time and effort into them. In U.I.L. calculator applications, which is the main activity that I partake in, I sacrifice my time almost everyday after school and sometimes my lunch period throughout the school year, as well as the majority of my Saturdays to compete and practice. Not a lot of students would give up this much time and effort unless they are very dedicated. This also reflects my leadership and character as one has to work and communicate…

NHS looks for people with traits such as leadership, people who are outgoing in their community, and people with a great quality of character. If I am selected to be in this group, I would contribute to the growth of NHS by spreading information about what NHS is to other students and teachers. Before I got this application, I didn’t even know what NHS was and what you do once you are in it. I want other people to know the importance of this group and how it can look good not just for when you apply to colleges, but to yourself as well.…

National Honor Society (NHS) is built upon four key values (scholarship, character, leadership, and service), and I think that I exemplify all four of these values, as I show them through my contribution to the club now and as I will show them through my future officer position of secretary; due to the fact that I exhibit these qualities, I will also be able to leave NHS better than I found when I leave the club in the future. NHS has offered lots of service opportunities since I have joined the club, and it offers a challenging experience for the top students in the sophomore through senior classes; fifty hours must be completed by the end of the year for returning members, and fifty hours must be completed by the next school year for new members. The club ultimately instilled in me important and very useful life qualities. The service activities that must be completed improve my work ethic and ability to work in groups with others, and they also help me get involved more with my community. As a future officer, I would be a great example for members because I have all the qualities needed to be a great NHS leader, allowing me to contribute to NHS as much as I can and to also mold future members to be like myself.…

Squeals of joy filled the room as a number of my peers discovered that they had been accepted into National Honor Society, their thick envelopes still fresh with the smell of accomplishment. Failures are a part of life, and, big or small, they shape our character by the way we pick ourselves up afterward. National Honor Society meant more for me than just the title; it was a chance for me to prove my worth and challenge myself to reach new limits. Coming from the city of Paterson, New Jersey, a community renowned for its polluted streets and frequent gang violence, I formed my determination to rise above the standards of my environment.…
