With the chance to exhibit and further develop my leadership skills as section leader and assistant concert mistress, I set the example for my fellow musicians by expressing true musicianship to fulfill my duty to the ensemble and execute a successful performance. Life is an orchestrated ensemble composed of varying styles and ever-changing tempos, and I believe that my ability to …show more content…

Last fall, I applied to SMU and wrote about how like many institutions, SMU is a place where leaders are shaped. Not many institutions, however, can boast that its institution is shaping leaders inside and outside of the classroom. In my opinion, education is a tool one can use to change markets and societies, which is vital in order to eradicate global poverty. However, education is useless until one applies it to the real world. While Wake Forest University has provided me with a challenging curriculum, the lack of opportunities in Winston Salem almost make the classroom experience at Wake seem useless.…

I am applying for a commission in the Army JAG Corps to continue my interrupted service to our country. I was brought up with a very strong sense of selfless service to our nation and to my community. I was fortunate to be able to proudly serve our country with distinction for 17 years on active duty and in the Reserves (12 or 13 good years for retirement purposes) but unfortunately I had to make one of the most difficult decisions of my life in 2007 and leave the service. At the time, I had a family with three young children, a high pressure long hours job in a large law firm, a high tempo reserve assignment in PSYOP (two mobilizations in four years), and an elderly father with late stage Alzheimer’s which required immense time and effort…

Although our problem is about colleges, we don’t want students to be confused on what to do in life after college. We would get freshmen and sophomores focused on careers so as juniors they can find a college to match their career. Students would use the information we give them to fill out a worksheet for both careers and colleges to save for later use. We recognized that some students may not be interested in doing this so we decided to schedule an assembly in February where current seniors and former alumni give their experiences, stories, and regrets while preparing and applying to college. We are hoping that this will encourage students to do the worksheets and dedicate more time to preparing for…

During my employment at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston I was able to work with a graduate of MCPHS, Kaiming (Kyle) Chiang, MPAS, PA-C. His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…

I believe in the ancient saying “it takes a village to raise a child”, as I have experienced it in my own development as a member of society. Although, in my case the village consists of a variety of programs and clubs that have molded me to who I am today. As an involved individual, I have noticed I have benefitted educationally, and socially as well. I began high school being a member in New Mexico Tech’s Upward Bound Program. Through this program, Loyola Marymount University for an on-campus stay.…

“Let’s try to finish up rehearsal by 3:00”, says Tiffany, the 1st violinist in my string quartet. I chuckle, because, knowing how meticulous and picky we are when it comes to rehearsing songs, I know that we won’t be leaving for another 20 minutes. Although I do love busting out tunes, from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles, on my viola, performing with a string quartet is undeniably hard. Not only do I show up to our intense weekly rehearsals, but I also help organize our performances at local nursing homes and events as our music club’s secretary. But it’s an enjoyable challenge – my quartet and I are often found hanging out in the orchestra room after school, debating on what pop song to play next, and bonding through our ingrained passion for…

I walked through the chairs toward the conductor’s podium and felt as though hundreds of stares were burning into my back. I sat down next to my new stand-partner, and, despite her best attempt to hide it, her grimace clearly revealed her feelings. I couldn’t blame her: I was a seventh-grader playing in a high school level orchestra. She was a senior stuck with the baby. Making music in an orchestral setting is, at its core, collaborative.…

When I was a freshman, I decided to take private violin lessons and join my teacher’s private orchestra group to further my skills. Although, this was where I faced my biggest struggle: playing in front of others. During the rehearsal, the conductor would ask us to individually play a specific section in the music to test if we practiced or not. When she announced we were going to play one by one, I would get anxious and fidget. During my turn, I would play quietly and out of tune.…
