I believe that I should be chosen to attend SUMMET because I am passionate about engineering and technology. I first fell in love with technology and engineering when I was 14. After my robotics team fell apart, I was invited to participate in a robotic team of five members in a rural community forty-five miles from my home. I struggled to find people who shared my passion at a school with 100 high school students. In this new team, I found my future, but I also found struggles. After attending a state championship with my friend, also a female, we faced sexism. We heard comments that insulted our intelligence because we were females. They assumed our coach had built the robot instead of us, because he was a male. I realize I must face this …show more content…
Athletics helps me gain a greater understanding of momentum and force. My main sport is throwing discus and shotput. By focusing on technique, I find how to increase speed and maximize momentum. I apply my observations to robotic engineering. I notice which arm movements create the most torque, and transfer my knowledge to ‘flicking’ a ball using a robot. FFA allows me to play a part in my rural community because I can recognize agricultural issues that I can solve with technology and engineering in the future. I also find teachers in the organization that encourage my love and passion for robotics. National Honor Society is an organization that promotes academics. The organization is nationwide, so I can share a bond with educated students all over America. Finally, theatre teaches me creativity. One of the hardest parts of robotics is seeing a problem and creating a machine that can solve the issue at hand. All aspects of my extracurricular activities play a role in who I want to become. Community service is another important role in my …show more content…
One of my most prestigious acts of service is doing a FIRST Lego League mentorship. I assisted six younger members of a team who were learning to become a part of my current team. I guided the members in programming and building and watched them grow. The team qualified for state and placed twelfth. However, my community service still includes other activities like helping Miracle Players produce a haunted house, various 4H activities for the community, and assisting an FTC team in learning about the basics. My community service activities make me proud of being able to help those in need. SUMMET will give me the opportunity to further educate myself in technology and engineering as well as meet other members who share my love and passion for STEM. As a student who attends a rural school, I find extreme difficulty finding others who share my passion; therefore, I must travel a great distance to find people who challenge and encourage my passion. Also, the program will give me an opportunity to see the college I strive to attend after my senior year. SUMMET will allow me to educate myself, meet people with similar goals, and see my possible college

National Honor Society Application Essay For any human to exhibit qualities throughout their lifestyle, one must transcend in certain aspects of their nature. Everyone is born with a different character or personality and not everyone exceeds in all of the same categories, however; I would place myself among the four characteristics of scholarship, leadership, service, and outstanding character as some of the qualities where I excel.
