National Honor Society: A Short Story

The keys rattled, resonating a jingle of my apprehension. With shaking fingers, I desperately connected the cold, metal key to the lock on the mailbox and opened it eagerly. The letter that I had been fervently waiting for sat in the middle of a lofty pile glaring at me. With a deep and unsteady breath, I tore it open. My excitement vanished abruptly and was replaced with distress. I could not believe I had failed; I could not comprehend that I was rejected from the Math and Science Academy. Previously, I sprinted with giddiness to the mailbox, hopeful about the future. But now, the weight of the rejection dragged me to a pace slower than a slug’s. To distract myself from the tears that were threatening to fall from my red eyes, I flipped through the rest of the letters. A crispy, white letter with my name in bold letters caught my attention. I was introduced to afterschool clubs such as Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society. Additionally, my engineering teachers encouraged me to take challenging math and science courses. Through the academy’s efficacious efforts, I was prepared for college. Before coming to high school, I did not consider my future career goals. However, through the various activities done in the Engineering Academy classrooms, I understood ahead of time that the career path that I wished to follow was petroleum engineering. Subsequently, I did everything in my ability to get closer to my career goal, whether it was running for and winning the position of vice president in the Engineering Academy club or acquiring a part-time job at an engineering based organization. Soon, I realized that the rejection letter I received from the Math and Science Academy was a blessing in disguise. It was, after all, the reason I discovered my future career
